Now, not only do black people live among us, we have Irish black people too. To deny some people their naturally human discomfort with this rapid change will help no-one. To feed the paranoia of the fearful or intolerant by branding them racists at every turn will breed further self-righteousness and resentment. As long as we keep telling people that it is "racist" and unacceptable to feel fear of change and difference, we will never discuss it properly.
About David Thompson
Instead, well-meaning perma-student types no disrespect to students in anti-racist organisations no disrespect to aunties and uncles will continue to lose the head no disrespect to the French over niggly things like language, and hound no disrespect to dogs, foxes or hares decent people who mean no offence. How about trying instead to explain to people why they don't need to be afraid of foreigners and why they shouldn't shout "nigger" at black people?
How about trying to explain to communities around the country why they should let foreigners in and why change can be a good thing? But no, equality advocates are too busy arguing over whether maids should have to dress like maids and whether air hostesses no disrespect to cabin crews should be allowed wear trousers.
And people who should be helping us confront our fear of strangers are caught up in looking for imagined linguistic slights. Mark my words, black pudding and brown bread will be next.
